Culture and Tradition of Punjab – The culture of Punjab is the richest culture in the world. Punjab is renowned for its vibrant culture, which includes traditional music and dance forms like Bhangra and Gidda. The state is also famous for the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a significant religious site for Sikhs, and its rich culinary heritage, featuring dishes like butter chicken and sarson da saag. Some of the famous ones are; richly embroidered phulkari, costumes, utilitarian textiles, cotton, khaddar, malkha, khes weaving, woollen jamawar shawls, panja durries, parandi, nada (braids for hair and costumes), along with variety of costumes of different communities.

Punjabi Dress

A Punjabi suit that features two items – a qameez (top), salwar (bottom) is the traditional attire of the Punjabi people. Shalwars are trousers which are atypically wide at the waist but which narrow to a cuffed bottom. Traditional Sikh dress is an ordinary kurtah and cotton trousers, covered by a long hanging coat (choghah). The male Sikh is recognized especially by his practice of wearing his hair and beard uncut, the former being covered by a particularly large turban and the latter often restrained by a net.

Men

The most popular traditional wear of Punjabi men includes Kurta and Pyjama. Kurta is a long shirt with slashes on both the side and long sleeves. Pyjamas are loose baggy pants tied with a drawstring. However, the kurta can be worn with lungi, dhoti or jeans.

Women

From ghagra to salwar suit and Patiala salwar, the traditional garb of Punjabi women is very popular all over India. Traditionally, men have been wearing the Punjabi kurta or Tehmat in Muktsari style. They have now updated the classic wear with kurta and pyjama.

Turban

For religious reasons, practicing Sikhs do not cut their hair. Sikh men wrap their long hair with a turban called a pagri, a practice that typically takes 10- 15 minutes.

Punjabi Foods

Punjabis are known to be very helpful, welcoming and proud people. They welcome everyone with open hearts (and of course a glass of Lassi and typical Punjabi food). They celebrate their festivals with great zeal and zest, with great food, music, dances and revelry. Common ones are chana masala, nan, chole kulche, aloo paratha, paneer paratha, gobi paratha, paratha with curd, paratha with butter, halwa poori, bhatoora, falooda, makhni doodh, Amritsari lassi, masala chai, tea, Amritsari kulchas, dahi vada, dahi, khoa, paya, aloo paratha with butter, panjeeri with milk.

Bhangra, folk dance and music of the Punjab (northwestern India and northeastern Pakistan) and the popular music genre that emerged from it in the mid-to-late 20th century. Bhangra is the most famous dance form in Punjab and across the world. This dance form was originally associated with the harvesting season of Punjab and traditionally performed during the festival of Baisakhi.
