The city underwent rapid industrialization. Richard Wellesley, the Governor General of Kolkata, worked diligently on the architecture of the city and developed it as the “City of Palaces”. This was the era of a high British influence on the culture of Kolkata. Kolkata is widely famous for the rich variety of textiles that abound here. A large variety of silk, taant and cotton sarees are available here. There are varieties of linen, Khadi, Bangladeshi Dhakais, handloom Benarasis that can be found here. Bengalis have influenced and contributed to diverse fields, notably the arts and architecture, language, folklore, literature, politics, military, business, science and technology.

Men

The traditional dresses of west bengal men is a ‘panjabi and dhoti‘ which is the state’s equivalent of a North-Indian kurta and pyjama. It is called so because it was inspired by the actions of Punjabi in the 17th Century.

Women

While the traditional attire for Bengali women is the saree, contemporary sartorial choices also include kurtas and salwars that are paired with exquisite dupattas (drapes) and stoles that come in traditional weaves, motifs and colors. Of the many Kolkata famous saree names, Tant saree is one of the most highly treasured. The Tant saree is a must-have in the wardrobe of a Bengali lady. It is an extremely light and breathable saree. Thus, the Tant saree is ideal for wearing every day in the hot and humid climate of Bengal.

Bengali Foods

There is a strong emphasis on rice as a staple, with fish traditionally the most common protein. Freshwater fish are preferred to seafish, although barramundi, known as bhetki, is also common. Meat is also a common protein among Bengalis with chicken and mutton meat being the most popular.

Bengali Sweets

generally Bengali people are equated with sweet dishes because a number of Bengali sweets are immensely popular among Indians and foreigners alike. Rossogolla, Sandesh, Mishti Doi are truly a delight for any food lover.
